![]() ![]() Years ago, his father, Guy, vanished during one of his tower treks. The promise of fame and fortune is enticing, but Koh has a personal reason for wandering the tower. Koh, an ambitious young lad with fiery red hair and the puffiest lips I have ever seen on an anime character, has just turned fifteen and is raring to head into the tower. Residents of Monsbaiya are allowed to enter the tower after they turn fifteen so they can find treasure, cultivate monster eggs or test themselves in battle. Outside of the town is a massive tower that is, fittingly, called the Monster Tower. It takes place in the desert town of Monsbaiya. Of course, it’s that same level of individuality that will turn away casual gamers or those that don’t have the patience to try something that strays from conventional style.Īzure Dreams has an interesting story. Azure Dreams will provide a unique experience that will never be replicated. Yes, this game has been out for two decades, but it has aged relatively well. Above all, Azure Dreams is one of the most addictive games I have ever played. Azure Dreams is one of the most frustrating games I have ever played. You also can’t leave the tower unless you have a Wind Crystal.Azure Dreams is one of the quirkiest games I have ever played. I say this because you can’t save inside the tower and if you die inside, you lose all of the loot you found. This sounds like a raw deal, but your familiars retain their levels, which is why strengthening them as much as possible will save your sorry ass from certain death and a whole lot of grief. These creatures fight alongside you and add both physical, magical and combination attacks to your arsenal.įamiliars are key to winning this game because the tower’s curse actually drops your stats to level one every time you leave the tower. Finally, you can find monster’s eggs in the tower and hatch them at home to increase your stock of familiars. You can find stronger weapons throughout the tower, but honestly the only weapons worth having are the Holy Sword and Diamond shield because they aren’t affected by rust traps. This sounds boring, but the tower’s floors are randomly generated so every time you climb is a different experience. You spend the entire game climbing this one tower, collecting items to sell for profit. Seriously, if you have the money you can improve the town. For an unassuming public, the formula hadn’t grown stale yet so there was a veritable smorgasbord of animal bondage available for American youngsters. Given that Pokemon’s Japanese release occured in 1996, it was pretty obvious that Atlus, Square and Konami were all trying to cash in on the demand for cockfighting simulators. That same year saw the release of Kartia, Jade Cocoon and Azure Dreams. Interestingly enough, a veritable swarm of RPGs based on the premise of capturing and enslaving monsters immediately followed. It was a strange world where the internet still hadn’t integrated itself into every aspect of our lives and a little phenomenon known as Pokemon would first arrive on North American shores. ![]() Let’s jump into the wayback machine to a magical time known as 1998. Finding a guilty pleasure game that I actually enjoy took a lot of consideration and I think I’ve found it in Azure Dreams. Take DOA Xtreme Beach Volleyball, for example I feel guilty playing it but it’s also a boring, terrible game that I derived very little enjoyment from beyond the initial lulz. This is a hard category for me to fill because there aren’t really a lot of games I feel guilty about playing that I actually like playing. ![]()
